The Society's annual celebration theme in '07 was "Dental Assistants Are Out of This World," and everything was geared to outer space. There was a six-hour credit presentation and luncheon and all attendees received a world-globe stress ball and other astral goodies including individual photos surrounded by inflatable aliens. Room and table decorations carried out the theme and door prizes added to the fun. Dental assisting students and hygienists joined in with members and nonmembers for this winning event. SECOND PLACE NORTHEAST PENNSYLVANIA DA DALLAS, PA A spa party to thank all dental assistants for their commitment to the profession included soothing music, aromatherapy and a pampering hand massage. Refreshments were served and the evening concluded with a presentation of long stemmed roses. The event was sponsored by Benco Dental. WAHPETON, ND Presented by Lucinda Johnson Postcards were sent to all North Dakota dental offices urging observance of DARW, and NDDAA Board members presented a power point feature to the two area dental assisting colleges. In addition, the North Dakota Dental Foundation joined the Board in providing dental assisting students luncheon. Board members supplemented the feature's message of the benefits of belonging to a professional organization by sharing their personal experiences with students. Door prizes rounded out this rewarding event. [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] DENTAL ASSISTING SCHOOLS FIRST PLACE OCM BOCES (ONONDAGA/CORTLAND/MADISON) LIVERPOOL, NY Presented by Nancy Chappell Dental Assisting students joined forces with Smile Train to raise funds for helping underprivileged children needing cleft palate cleft palate, incomplete fusion of bones of the palate. The cleft may be confined to the soft palate at the back of the mouth; it may include the hard palate, or roof of the mouth; or it may extend through the gum and lip, producing a gap in the teeth and a cleft surgery. Toothbrushes and toothpaste were sold at the school and dental offices were visited to solicit funds. Also in further recognition of DARW, students distributed carnations to local dental assistants. The students' initial funding goal was surpassed with a total of $1250 raised in behalf of five deserving children. SECOND PLACE NORTH DAKOTA STATE COLLEGE OF SCIENCE The North Dakota State College of Science (NDSCS) is a 2-year public college in Wahpeton, North Dakota and part of the North Dakota University System. Founded in 1903 by provision of the state constitution, the State College of Science offers introductory studies in science, ALLIED DENTAL EDUCATION WAHPETON, ND Presented by Lucinda Johnson Students made pins for the dental assistants in the school's nearby affiliation sites to kick off DARW, followed by the construction of a clinic bulletin board and library window display showing the various expanded functions of a dental assistant. Students also carried out toothprint projects with kits donated by Patterson Dental and staffed a table giving away free toothpaste. The always popular Ms. Molar and the Tooth Fairy raised money that was matched by the instructors. These funds will be used to purchase toothbrushes for charitable organizations. Contests, prizes, refreshments and a luncheon as well as dental assisting students providing dental health talks to hometown grade school students rounded out this very active DARW for North Dakota State. "Smile" bags for children in the clinic waiting room were made too. These were brightly decorated canvas bags containing books, crayons and activity sheets. It started with a food drive sponsored by the local township, it included a speaker from Benco Dental on types and importance of safety glasses, attendance at the local dental assistants society's educational meeting with prizes and refreshments and ended with a Kids' Night party featuring brushing instructions and a dental care kit for each child. Staff provided the D.A. students with a small token gift each day of the week. A display sign welcomed and informed all students and visitors about the Week too. After this fast-paced excursion they arrived back at the office for another surprise ... a catered lunch during which everyone compared purchases. CAROLINA PEDIATRIC DENTISTRY RALEIGH, NC Presented by Heather Henner The staff at this practice expresses appreciation for recognition all year long but especially during DARW. Staff and their spouses were treated to a limousine ride to dinner at a local leading restaurant and given a personal care gift basket. NEW TOWN DENTAL ARTS WILLIAMSBURG, VA Presented by Lori Shahan, CDA During DARW, dental assistants were treated to daily goodies from doctors and other staff members and a picture of the practice's assistants was taken and sent to the local paper. When it was printed it added some extra recognition to that which they received at the office. There was also a photo contest and a trivia contest. A pizza luncheon and a bowling party were provided and a raffle funded by all the doctors included an IPod valued at $140. SECOND PLACE DENTAL TEMPS OF NORTHEAST FLORIDA, INC. JACKSONVILLE, FL Presented by Kim Knapp Announcements of DARW were mailed to over 550 dental offices in northern Florida along with contest entry forms. Proclamations were received from the mayor of Jacksonville as well as from county officials. The contest asked dentists to nominate the best dental assistant from their county and one winner from each county was honored with a cash gift, flowers and a commemorative certificate. Celebrity Michael Jackson's visit to the fitness center coincided with DARW, and assistants were able to attend this function. LEE, VA Presented by SFC Tomaruin Polite An attractive and personalized certificate of appreciation was presented to the clinic's dental assistants, and Command leadership served luncheon and roses to the staff to show their appreciation. FORT MEADE, MD Presented by Deanna Benicewicz Banners at the Fort's two dental clinics and posters in their waiting rooms introduced visitors and staff to DARW at Fort Meade. A luncheon on base was sponsored by doctors and DC#3 assistants were treated to breakfast, flowers, treats and bowling. FORT POLK, LA Presented by SFC Robie Bivens A huge banner greeted assistants as they came to work on the first day of DARW and every day of the week offered a variety of surprises including breakfast prepared and served by the doctors and NCOIC, certificates of appreciation, a bowling tournament and a pizza luncheon. [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] FORT RILEY, KS Presented by LTC LTC abbr. lieutenant colonel Nancy Ellison Major General Carter Ham, Fort Riley's Commanding General signed a proclamation beginning DARW at Fort Riley, and assistants in attendance were presented with the CG's coin in appreciation for their dedicated work efforts. Further treats included a barbecue luncheon, an ice cream social and breakfast feasts at each clinic. Assistants received handmade angel pins with stars depicting the "Shining Star" theme chosen for this year's DARW by Fort Riley. FORT STEWART DENTAC/HUNTER ARMY AIRFIELD FT. STEWART, GA Presented by SSG Annitta Bright The entrance marquee announced the start of DARW and the six clinics of Fort Stewart Dental Activity continued the celebration by providing breakfast treats, homemade sweets, clinic luncheons and personalized gifts. At the closing Friday luncheon, dental assistants received a certificate of appreciation and a canvas tote. [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] WALTER REED DENTAL ACTIVITY Washington, DC Presented by SFC Marsha Wheeler At all four Walter Reed dental clinics breakfast treats were served, trivia contests held with gift cards awarded from local stores and restaurants. There was a pizza luncheon on Wednesday and Thursday and on Friday some clinics took field trips while others enjoyed bingo and other tournaments with prizes. Ft. Meyer showcased each assistant and auxiliary with a biography and portrait and letter of appreciation and other clinics issued certificates of appreciation. |
