Denel.
Denel, under a multi-billion Rand contract awarded by South
Africa's defence acquisition agency Armscor, is slated to develop
the new South African Army's family of armoured vehicles to replace
the current Ratel. Known as the Hoefyster (Horseshoe), the programme
includes five variants spread over more than 250 vehicles, all based on
the Patria AMS. The project is likely to stretch over a period of ten
years. The five variants are command, mortar, missile, section and fire
support. Industrial workshare has not been finalised, but it is believed
that around 70% will be granted to local manufacturers, including the
turret and part assembly of the Finnish 8 x 8 base.
