Dendreon Corporation (Nasdaq:DNDN) today announced that it has been awarded U.S. patent No. 6,416,958 "Selective Apoptosis of Neoplastic Cells by an HLA-DR specific Monoclonal Antibody monoclonal antibody, an antibody that is mass produced in the laboratory from a single clone and that recognizes only one antigen. Monoclonal antibodies are typically made by fusing a normally short-lived, antibody-producing B cell (see immunity) to a fast-growing ."

The patent covers all monoclonal antibody therapies that target the HLA-DR molecule on tumor cells and induce cell death (apoptosis) in those cancer cells.

"This patent gives Dendreon broad protection for our monoclonal antibody product candidates aimed at treating leukemias and lymphomas," said Reiner Laus, M.D., vice president of research at Dendreon. "The claims not only cover our lead monoclonal antibody candidate, DN1924, but any antibody that induces programmed cell death pro·grammed cell death

"This patent will position us to become the dominant player in antibodies directed against HLA-DR positive malignancies. We are pleased that DN1924 is in line to be one of the first monoclonal antibodies from Dendreon's pipeline to enter clinical development," said Christopher S. Henney, Ph.D., D.Sc., chief executive officer. "Other antibodies are already undergoing preclinical testing for the potential treatment of soft tissue malignancies such as prostate, breast and colon cancer colon cancer, cancer of any part of the colon (often called the large intestine). Colon cancer is the second most common cancer diagnosed in the United States.  and autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis rheumatoid arthritis

Chronic, progressive autoimmune disease causing connective-tissue inflammation, mostly in synovial joints. It can occur at any age, is more common in women, and has an unpredictable course.
. We believe we now have one of the most diverse and robust antibody programs and are working hard to advance these exciting opportunities into the clinic as soon as possible."
