Even in his eloquence, Edward W. Said has understated the rottenness of the Bush military campaign in Iraq ("A Mask for Pillage PILLAGE. The taking by violence of private property by a victorious army from the citizens or subjects of the enemy. This, in modern times, is seldom allowed, and then, only when authorized by the commander or chief officer, at the place where the pillage is committed. ," June issue). It will be the height of folly for the Democrats to start nitpicking nit·pick·ing

Minute, trivial, unnecessary, and unjustified criticism or faultfinding.

 about who supported and opposed the Iraq military campaign, instead of concentrating on getting decisive control of the White House and Congress.

In "A Mask for Pillage," Said stated that the United States is on a "quest for reshaping reality and imparting democracy to everyone." The Bush Administration has little to do with exporting democracy because its policies are engaged in force-feeding capitalism to other nations. Unfortunately, many people believe democracy and capitalism are synonymous, but they have little to do with one another.

Said also points out that the people of the United States must take back our democracy. But have we ever really had a government of, by, and for the people when the founding Constitution was made of, by, and for a white, male, privileged, land-owning class? A place to start to hope for the recovery of, or the beginning of, a true democracy would be with the abolition of the Electoral College electoral college, in U.S. government, the body of electors that chooses the president and vice president. The Constitution, in Article 2, Section 1, provides: "Each State shall appoint, in such Manner as the Legislature thereof may direct, a Number of Electors, .
