Dementia death risk.


THOUSANDS of dementia patients' lives are being put at risk by drugs used to make them less aggressive, it was claimed yesterday.

The Alzheimer's Research Trust warned the use of antipsychotic medication Antipsychotic medication
A drug used to treat psychotic symptoms, such as delusions or hallucinations, in which patients are unable to distinguish fantasy from reality.

And chief executive Rebecca Wood pleaded for funds to be poured into developing more effective treatments.

Professor Suber Banerjee's research linked anti-psychotic drugs to 1800 deaths in England and he said he believed the situation was similar in the rest of the UK.

The Scottish government The Scottish Government (SG) (Scottish Gaelic: Riaghaltas na h-Alba) is the executive arm of government of Scotland. It was established in 1999 as the Scottish Executive  are consulting on their dementia strategy.

A spokeswoman said: "We are due to publish Scotland's first ever national dementia strategy in April and, as part of that, we are already looking into the issue of how medicines can and should be prescribed pre·scribe
