The 195-room waterfront hotel has more than 11,000 square feet of conference space, including its largest 5,000-square-foot Algoma Ballroom. Algoma Central Properties, owners of the hotel for 35 years, are shouldering the costs which include upgrading and modernizing the fitness club, pool, restaurant-lounge, lobby and front desk. New elevators, laundry and kitchen equipment will be installed in 2010. "We have a pretty aggressive timeline for completion," said Bill Durnford, general manager for the last eight years. The renovations must be done by early 2010, when the hotel will serve as the headquarters for the Scotties Tournament of Hearts, the Canadian women's curling curling, winter sport, similar in principle to bowls and quoits (see horseshoe pitching), played on an ice court by teams of four. The waterfront location has always offered great views of the St. Mary's River but the decor was getting a bit dated and tired, said Durnford. The last major guest room renovations were in 2002, "but the property has not seen any dollars of any kind in the last two or three years." The upscale Delta brand is geared toward more of a business clientele, especially for conferences. Guests will notice better room amenities with the bedding packages, flat-screen TVs, walk-in showers, with new bathroom finishes. There will be a renewed focus on the food-beverage service, and the conference-banquets rooms will have some upcoming audio-visual-broadband technical enhancements. "Our vision, once we're completed, is to work toward being the premier hotel in Northern Ontario," said Durnford. Conferences have always been a good chunk of the hotel's business. With the Delta brand and their access to the company's business and rewards programs, they expect to do even better, Delta's sales network and national marketing group have affiliations with various provincial and national organizations and sports group. "Delta's going to bring a lot to the table," said Durnford. Talks with Delta began a year ago and came to agreement in the spring. The deal was formally announced in May. Delta has been in expansion brand mode and the Sault's location as a border town with its waterfront visibility all combined to make the partnership an "excellent fit," said Dunford. www.saultwaterfrontinn.com By IAN ROSS Ian Ross is the name of:
