The Department of Defense today recognized Dell with a 2002 Assistant Secretary of Defense for Reserve Affairs Home-Front Award for the company's support of its National Guard and Reserve employees.

The Home-Front Award, presented during a ceremony in Washington, D.C., highlights recipients for providing exceptional service to the nation's armed forces involved in Operations Noble Eagle and Enduring Freedom. Both operations involved partial mobilization See: mobilization, Part 2.  of the Air Force, Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard National Guard and Reserve members for homeland defense and the war on terrorism Terrorist acts and the threat of Terrorism have occupied the various law enforcement agencies in the U.S. government for many years. The Anti-Terrorism and Effective Death Penalty Act of 1996, as amended by the usa patriot act .

"Dell plays a substantial role in our nation's defense by supporting their Guard and Reserve employees' who are serving our country," said Bob Hollingsworth, executive director of the National Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve. "For this reason, it is tremendously important that we recognize the contributions of employers, especially those who go above and beyond the requirements of the law."

Dell was chosen by the National Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve, a Department of Defense organization whose mission is to gain and maintain employer support for members of the National Guard and Reserve forces.

The committee cited Dell for being the first high-tech employer to sign a Department of Defense Statement of Support. The Honorable Thomas F. Hall Secretary Thomas F. Hall, a native of Barnsdall, Oklahoma, was sworn in as the fourth Assistant Secretary of Defense for Reserve Affairs on October 9, 2002. A Presidential appointee confirmed by the Senate, he serves as the principal staff assistant to the United States Secretary , assistant secretary of defense for reserve affairs, delivered the presentation during a luncheon at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce The U.S. Chamber of Commerce is the world's largest not-for-profit federation of businesses, representing more than 3 million businesses and organizations in the United States. As of 2003, the chamber was comprised of 3000 state and local chambers and 830 business associations.  in conjunction with the Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Awards.

"We believe it's critical for private industry to have a strong, mutual support for our U.S. armed forces," said Brian Wood, vice president and general manager of Dell's government segment. The segment provides technology to the Department of Defense and many other government agencies. "We're proud of our Guard and Reserve employees serving at home and in worldwide military missions."
