Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) is a NASA research center located in the cities of Pasadena and La Cañada Flintridge, near Los Angeles, California, USA.
(JPL) in California is ranked as one of the 50 fastest supercomputers according to the "Top 500 Supercomputing List." The ranking was announced Monday at the SC2004 conference on high-performance computing, networking and storage.

JPL, managed for NASA by the California Institute of Technology California Institute of Technology, at Pasadena, Calif.; originally for men, became coeducational in 1970; founded 1891 as Throop Polytechnic Institute; called Throop College of Technology, 1913–20. , has used "big iron" supercomputers for its research and engineering projects since the late 1980s. However, Dr. Chris Catherasoo, supervisor of JPL's Supercomputing and Virtualization Facility, and his colleagues noticed that clusters of standards-based server systems increasingly ranked among the top supercomputing sites.

"More and more of the top 500 supercomputers are cluster-based," Catherasoo said. "As 'big iron' isn't as cost-effective as standards-based clusters, we decided it was time to move to a solution with better price for performance."

The Dell cluster, to be used for earth and space science research, as well as space craft engineering and design, is comprised of 512 Dell PowerEdge(TM) 1750 servers with dual 3.2 GHz Intel(R) Xeon processors. The cluster, running Red Hat Linux Red Hat Linux, assembled by Red Hat, was a popular, "middle-aged" Linux distribution (not as old as Slackware but older than Ubuntu) upon its discontinuation in 2004.[1]

Red Hat Linux 1.0 was released on November 3, 1994.
, has performed up to 4.3 trillion floating-point operations per second (TFLOPS See teraFLOPS. ) on the High-Performance Linpack (HPL HPL - Language used in HP9825A/S/T "Desktop Calculators", 1978(?) and ported to the early Series 200 family (9826 and 9836, 68000). Fairly simple and standard, but with extensive I/O support for data acquisition and control (BCD, Serial, 16 bit custom and IEEE 488 interfaces),  benchmark).

Though it sees its roots back to the Kurpfälzische Akademie der Wissenschaften of 1763, the actual university was founded in 1907 as college for economics. , Germany compile the "Top 500 Supercomputing Sites" list twice a year. The list, created in 1993 and now comprised of more than 50 percent cluster systems based on the X86 server architecture, is available at www.top500.org.

About the JPL Supercomputing and Visualization Facility

The JPL Supercomputing and Visualization Facility, formed in May 2000, succeeded the JPL Supercomputing Project established in 1989. Its mission is to provide all JPL engineers and scientists with the best possible state-of-the-art high-performance computing and visualization environment to help them solve their computationally-intensive problems.
