The managed-deployment strategy includes new capabilities like Dell's Weekend Notebook Exchange(a) and ComputraceComplete(R) Recovery Guarantee(b). The services support Dell's new line of desktop, notebook and workstation computers for business customers announced today at a Nasdaq Market site news conference.

Dell's managed-deployment services are a component of Dell Managed Services An umbrella term for third-party monitoring and maintaining of computers, networks and software. The actual equipment may be inhouse or at the third-party's facilities, but the "managed" implies an ongoing effort; for example, making sure the equipment is running at a certain quality , which cover the full lifecycle of desktop and notebook systems. Managed services, which also include day-to-day support, are a key component of how customers can realize value and the lowest total cost of ownership.

"We selected Dell for primarily two reasons: price and service," said Bob Bennett, general manager, product development at Alias. "Certainly Dell is affordable, but it goes beyond that. Dell's easy to do business with."

Managed Deployment Saves Customers Money

Customers have told Dell that the deployment of new desktops and notebooks often takes too long, costs too much and is much too disruptive.

"A manually performed PC migration takes more than four hours of a technician's time," said Michael Silver, vice president and research director at Gartner Inc. "Meanwhile the user typically is without their system for eight hours. On average this costs the company $226 per PC."

Tools and processes Dell has introduced into the deployment process have helped reduce these customer costs. Dell managed deployment services, designed for mobile business professionals, begin in product development and continue until the technology hardware being replaced is properly recycled. Dell's direct business model enables customers' company software images and applications to be loaded during manufacturing through the company's custom factory integration (CFI CFI

) process.

"Dell can frequently save customers up to 40 percent in cost over a typical manual deployment and can reduce the typical deployment time by more than half," said Steve Meyer Steve Meyer (21 March 1984 - ) is a South African professional rugby union player currently playing for French outfit USA Perpignan in the position flyhalf.

, vice president of marketing, Dell's services business. "Our approach to tailored product and service integration in the factory is a way for us to deliver value and security to customers."

Take the Weekend Off on Dell

Weekend Notebook Exchange, which enables customers to have existing data and files transferred to their new notebook is among Dell's new managed deployment capabilities. Customers shipping their old systems to Dell by Friday can have their software images installed, data transferred and in most cases their new system shipped to the customer on Monday. The goal is a two-day turnaround.

Customers who order Weekend Notebook Exchange and return their old notebooks to Dell receive market value for them. Dell's Asset Recovery Services, which are included in the Weekend Notebook Exchange capability, ensure the old systems are properly recycled and their sensitive data overwritten.

Notebook Lost or Stolen -- No Problem

Help is close by for mobile professionals whose notebooks are lost or stolen. Customers whose computer is lost or stolen can receive up to $1,000 if their computer is not recovered within 60 days with Absolute's ComputraceComplete Recovery Guarantee(b). The software can be loaded in Dell's factory.

Dell Delivers New Desktops Notebooks and Workstations

Dell's Managed Deployment services complement the global launch of the Dell Latitude Dell's Latitude laptop brand is specifically targeted at the business market which means that standardized parts are used throughout the line and are available for several years for support purposes, as opposed to the Dell Inspiron which is aimed at the consumer market and whose (TM) D-family notebooks -- the D410, D610, and D810.
