"Our students and their families are very environmentally conscious, and we want to set an example by making sure we are properly recycling our technology hardware," said Gray Salada, Chief Information Officer, AISD. "Taking care of the environment is an important issue and a lesson we can help teach our students by partnering with Dell, a company that shares our concern for the environment and understands local, state and industry regulations."

AISD educates 77,000 students across 110 campuses in the Austin area. With three to five computers in every classroom, the district will recycle and replace up to 10% of their systems each year after utilizing all of their potential value. The school district will spend about $4 million on technology this year with Dell.

AISD also works with Dell as a participant in the Dell TechKnow program, a 40-hour after-school curriculum that provides low-income middle-school students a chance to earn a free Dell refurbished desktop computer. The students learn to take apart and rebuild the systems and technology skills that promote self-esteem and academic success and help prepare them for opportunities in today's technology-driven world.

"Customers such as the Austin Independent School District rely on Dell to act as a key technology advisor, providing affordable, standards-based technology and services," said Gary Cotshott, vice president and general manager of Dell Services. "In addition, Dell will help the AISD maximize the lifespan of its technology and through our easy-to-use, cost-effective recycling program provide the flexibility and assurance that all such assets are disposed of in an environmentally sound way."
