Router and remote access sales generated $1.35 billion in manufacturer dollars during the first quarter of 1996. Routers comprised $965.9 million dollars, a 72 percent share of the total market. Remote access sales totaled $383.5 million dollars (28 percent share), and grew at the same rate as routers in both the first quarter of 1996 and the second half of 1995.

The fastest growing segments in the router market are low end and SOHO Soho (sōhō`, sə–), district of Westminster, London, England, known for its continental restaurants. Once a fashionable quarter, it became popular among writers and artists in the 19th cent.  Routers. Revenue from low end routers surpassed high end routers ($253.7 and $248.9 million dollars respectively), in the first quarter of 1996. Low end routers now represent 26 percent of the router market.

SOHO router revenue in the first quarter of 1996 was $76 million dollars, 25 percent more than the $62.5 million dollars in revenue reported for the entire first half of 1995.

In remote access, access servers are the fastest growing segment with first quarter sales 25 percent above the entire first half of 1995. Revenues accounted for 38 percent of all dollars in the remote access market in the first quarter of 1996, up 10 percentage points over the first half of 1995.
