Case Study

When the American Counseling Association The American Counseling Association (ACA) is a non-profit, professional organization that is dedicated to the counseling profession. ACA is the world's second largest association exclusively representing professional counselors.  sought to change the face of their annual meetings and provide increased continuing education continuing education: see adult education.

opportunities for its entire constituency, distance learning via the Internet was by far the most attractive and logical solution. To accomplish this goal, the ACA ACA - Application Control Architecture  turned to another group of professional problem-solvers--SeminarSource.com.

Because the ACA's conferences include a robust curriculum of continuing education presentations and professional development seminars that the organization wished to capture and catalogue online for on-demand viewing, SeminarCast proved to be the most effective solution. An initial relationship that began with SeminarSource.com providing services for one ACA conference has developed into an ongoing partnership.

"Many of our members lose revenue when they have to go offsite, which affects our conference attendance," comments Howard Smith, director of Professional Learning and Resources for the ACA. "SeminarCast will enable them to participate without leaving the office."

The first phase of the ACA project was to implement and manage a six-week trial to gauge member interest. SeminarSource.com developed a sample site with streaming content from the organization's video library and a brief survey, receiving more than 900 hits and an overwhelmingly positive response. The ACA then polled state licensor boards to determine if online professional development courses would satisfy continuing education requirements.

"All but a few state boards state boards Examinations administered by a US state board of medical examiners to license a physician in a particular state; these examinations play an ever-decreasing role in state medical licensure, as these bodies now rely on standardized national examinations  were willing to accept online professional development," noted Smith. "At that point, the team from SeminarSource.com took us by the hand in a very affirming way and led us through the project."

ACA now offers online courses that allow counselors to earn credits toward credential renewal with the simple click of a mouse from their home or office. Through the SeminarCast offering, ACA is also able to offer course content testing and evaluations along with the continuing education seminars being broadcast online.

"SeminarSource.com's technology made it easy for ACA members to transition from attending sessions in the traditional sense to participating via the Internet," said Smith.
