Del Monte Expands Port Manatee Operations.


PALMETTO, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 21, 1997--Port Manatee and Del Monte Fresh Produce N.A., Inc. agreed to a new five year lease Thursday worth an estimated $5 million to the port.

The Manatee County Port Authority approved the Del Monte deal with a unanimous vote. Authority Chairman Lari Ann Harris said, "We are delighted that Del Monte has consolidated its operations at Port Manatee Port Manatee is a deepwater seaport located in northern Manatee County, Florida. It is the fifth largest of Florida's 14 deepwater seaports. The port is served by mostly cargo ships, but the Regal Empress cruise ship did sail out of the port until the early 2000s. . This occasion represents a historic and important moment for the port."

The new facilities lease agreement consolidates Del Monte's existing 58,000 square-foot building at Port Manatee with a new 15,000 square foot cold storage warehouse, designed specifically for fruit products. The new building is expected to be ready for occupancy in November with the combined lease worth $339,000 annually to the port. Del Monte's previous lease was worth $186,000 annually and was due to expire in 1999.

Del Monte requested the additional warehouse space after consolidating its Southeastern United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. "Del Monte needs the new facilities for continued growth and to continue to provide excellent service for our customer base," Edmonson explained. "With the port's close proximity to the interstate highway system and easy rail connections, it's (Port Manatee) a better fit for us and our customers."

In 1996, Port Manatee's last complete fiscal period, Del Monte paid the port $687,221 for its operations there.
