Washington, town (1991 pop. 48,856), Sunderland metropolitan district, NE England. Washington was designated one of the new towns in 1964 to alleviate overpopulation in the Tyneside-Wearside area.

On April 29, about 200 people gathered near the headquarters of the World Bank and International Monetary Fund to protest the annual spring meeting of the two agencies and to call for Third World debt cancellation. During the protest, a group organizing a World Bank bonds boycott boycott, concerted economic or social ostracism of an individual, group, or nation to express disapproval or coerce change. The practice was named (1880) after Capt.  announced that six new entities--including the San Francisco San Francisco (săn frănsĭs`kō), city (1990 pop. 723,959), coextensive with San Francisco co., W Calif., on the tip of a peninsula between the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay, which are connected by the strait known as the Golden  Labor Council and the city of Takoma Park Takoma Park (təkō`mə), city (1990 pop. 16,700), Montgomery and Prince Georges counties, W central Md., a residential suburb of Washington, D.C.; inc. 1890. It is the international headquarters for the Seventh-day Adventists. , Maryland--have committed not to buy World Bank bonds.
