Defra aid boosts farmers' market.Pinchinthorpe Hall Farmer's Market has gained valuable extra space to meet growing demand from the public, thanks to a Rural Enterprise Scheme (RES) grant from Defra. The market, held in the grounds of the Pinchinthorpe Hall Hotel, near Guisborough, was launched in 2002 with around 12 stalls for local farmers and producers, including the hall's organic brewer and Georgian kitchen garden to sell their produce direct to customers. But no sooner had the market opened than a serious problem arose ( the market was held in the hotel car park so a farmers' market car park was needed. A nearby field was earmarked but it was not possible to lay any kind of hard surface. The solution was a unique kind of land reinforcement reinforcement /re·in·force·ment/ (-in-fors´ment) in behavioral science, the presentation of a stimulus following a response that increases the frequency of subsequent responses, whether positive to desirable events, or system that allowed the grass to grow through and Defra's RES grant helped fund its installation and buy more stalls. Now the market is flourishing, new jobs have been created to set out the stalls and attend to the car park and around 25 local farmers and producers regularly attend, selling everything from meat and dairy products dairy products dairy npl → produits laitier dairy products dairy npl → Milchprodukte pl, Molkereiprodukte pl to vegetables and handicrafts, and demand continues to increase. Anne Wood Anne Wood CBE is a British children's television producer. Her independent production company, "Ragdoll Productions", was founded in 1984 and specialises in making original programming for children 10 and under. , co-ordinator at Pinchinthorpe Hall Hotel, said: "We have just celebrated our second birthday and we owe this to Defra for coming to the rescue and providing financial support to cushion the blow of the unexpected cost of surfacing the car park. "This support also helped us to purchase five more stalls as well as storage trolleys, which reduce the setting up time by about two hours. "We now have a flourishing market, accredited accredited recognition by an appropriate authority that the performance of a particular institution has satisfied a prestated set of criteria. accredited herds cattle herds which have achieved a low level of reactors to, e.g. by FARMA (National Farmers' Retail and Markets Association). "We attract visitors from up to 50 miles away and many people say the atmosphere here at Pinchinthorpe is unique being situated alongside the hotel, a 17th century manor house, and having the organic brewery A brewery can be a building or place that produces beer, or a business (brewing company) whose trade is the production and sale of beer. Breweries can take up multiple city blocks, or be a collection of equipment in a homebrewer's kitchen. is an added bonus." Ken Haynes, rural development adviser at Defra's Rural Development Service North-East, said: "Many farmers are now selling their produce direct to customers through farmers' markets. "Bringing the producers and consumers together in this way also helps increase people's understanding of how our food is produced." |
