Defining L.A.'s prototypical techie.

The typical mover and shaker mover and shaker
n. pl. movers and shakers
One who wields power and influence in a sphere of activity: "the importance of hanging out with the movers and shakers of the art world"
in the Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  County high-tech industry is 41 years old, works 55 hours a week, makes $125,000 a year and has a net worth of more than $500,000.

The vast majority of the industry's top players are male and college graduates. But a fairly sizable number - more than 10 percent - do not have college degrees.

These are some of the findings of the Los Angeles Business Journal's first Who's Who Who’s Who

biographical dictionary of notable living people. [Am. Hist.: Hart, 922]

in High Technology, which provides details about the lives and careers of L.A.'s 100 most influential high-tech professionals.

The top pros' educational backgrounds are tremendously diverse, ranging from aerospace engineering to philosophy and journalism.

And that diversity has continued in their professional lives. Far from being a mere collection of computer whizzes, the Business Journal's Who's Who includes top high-tech talents from a broad spectrum of industries - entertainment, law, environmental services The various combinations of scientific, technical, and advisory activities (including modification processes, i.e., the influence of manmade and natural factors) required to acquire, produce, and supply information on the past, present, and future states of space, atmospheric, , energy, transportation, publishing and more.

There are several multimillionaires in the Who's Who, but there are also a few who plead relative poverty - with annual salaries of less than $70,000 and net worth under $100,000.

A significant number of L.A. high-tech wizards also don't like publicity - several industry heavyweights refused to participate in the survey.

"You have to remember something about this industry and that is that a lot of the people in it just aren't the flamboyant type," noted Randal Walti, president of Torrance-based Oaktree Consulting, a high-tech industry consulting firm Noun 1. consulting firm - a firm of experts providing professional advice to an organization for a fee

Many duck questions

In compiling the Who's Who in High Technology, the Business Journal identified dozens of influential people in the industry, and sent questionnaires to qualified candidates - informing them that they had been selected as a candidate for inclusion in the Who's Who publication.

Research conducted for some of the earlier Who's Who publications created by the Business Journal triggered aggressive lobbying by industry professionals and their representatives. This was especially true for the Who's Who in Commercial Real Estate and the Who's Who in Law, when candidates rushed to complete and submit survey materials and lobbied aggressively to be included.

By contrast, the high-tech industry's response to the Who's Who was noticeably more guarded.

Bill Manassero, president of the Software Council of Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region, , an industry trade group based in Torrance, confirmed that many people in the high-tech business shy away from Verb 1. shy away from - avoid having to deal with some unpleasant task; "I shy away from this task"

 publicity.

"You know, some of these people are making a tremendous amount of money, and they just don't want the notoriety. They don't want financial planners and such bothering them. Also, a lot of them are involved in different deals, and they don't want any publicity," he said.

Another local industry expert, Michael Terpin, who operates the Terpin Group, a Marina del Rey Del Rey may refer to:

He said people in the industry are extremely busy.

"I bet if you look at the number of hours some of these people work, you'll see that they are really busy and just don't have the time for these kinds of things. If you look at your survey, I'll bet I'll Bet was an NBC game show that aired from March 29 1965 to September 24 1965, that was created by Ralph Andrews. The host of this program was Jack Narz. It was a precursor of It's Your Bet, which aired with four different hosts during its four year run: Hal March, Tom  you see a lot of these people work a lot of hours," said Terpin.

information they provided in the questionnaires. With survey respondents citing an average work week of 55 hours, many in the group noted that they work 80 or more hours a week. A 60-hour work week is common; a 40-hour work week is uncommon.

The question about the typical work week was among several more-personal questions asked to help the Business Journal create a demographic profile A demographic or demographic profile is a term used in marketing and broadcasting, to describe a demographic grouping or a market segment. This typically involves age bands (as teenagers do not wish to purchase denture fixant), social class bands (as the rich may want  of the prototypical high-tech professional in Los Angeles County. Respondents were assured of personal anonymity, and were assured they would not be excluded from consideration for inclusion in the Who's Who if they decided not to answer the demographic questions.

To further encourage participation, these demographic questions were of the multiple-choice variety, with each choice covering a range of numbers, rather than a specific number.

Some specific information gathered from the questionnaires included:

* The average L.A. high-tech professional has an annual income in the range of $100,000 to $150,000 and a net worth of between $500,000 and $1 million.

* Eighty-four of the 100 included in the Who's Who reported having earned at least a bachelor's degree, and 12 said they are not college graduates.

* Thirty-nine have at least one master's degree master's degree
n.
An academic degree conferred by a college or university upon those who complete at least one year of prescribed study beyond the bachelor's degree.

Noun 1.
; 12 have doctorates and seven have law school degrees.

Local industry watchers said the average age of 41 reflects the fact that the local industry is comprised of two distinct groups.

Those two groups are young people drawn to high tech through the area's entertainment business, and an older group comprised of veterans of the county's defense and aerospace industry, said the experts.

Concerning the scarcity of women in the industry, the local experts said that is due to the predominance of men in such fields as engineering and computer technology. The experts added, however, that more women are becoming involved in the high-tech industry.
