LEOMINSTER - With its offense having trouble getting on track in last night's game against Division 1A rival Leominster, the St. John's defense stole the show, making several key stops and allowing time for the Pioneers' offense to get going.

The result was a 28-6 win at Doyle Field for top-ranked St. John's.

The Pioneers (7-0, 3-0 Division 1A) scored on their first possession as Griffin Murphy found Will Feraco for a 12-yard touchdown catch over the middle to cap a 7-play, 55-yard drive.

Leominster answered on its next possession, as Malik Noun 1. malik - the leader of a town or community in some parts of Asia Minor and the Indian subcontinent; "maliks rule the hinterland of Afghanistan under the protection of warlords"  Daniel's 42-yard run keyed a drive that brought up first-and-goal at the St. John's 2-yard line. After Geraldo Rivera gained a yard up the middle, Dan Light came up big by stuffing Rivera for no gain on the next play. "That fired us up a ton," Moore said. "We weren't really doing well in the beginning, but after we made that stop, we were like, `Offense, we have to pick it up.' Our offensive line made some adjustments, and then we started pushing the ball downfield down·field

ways to get the offense going, so he suggested a play they've been working on in practice. The Pioneers drove downfield to start the second half - with Light getting a 42-yard carry up the middle to put the ball at the Leominster 17 - before John Vassar broke through the middle on the play Moore suggested to make it 13-0.

"We've been working on this play where the guard pulls and I cover him," Moore said. "I told (the coaches) why don't we do that? The first time we did it, we scored."

Leominster cut the lead to 13-6 when Daniel (15 carries, 127 yards) took a draw play on third-and-8 for a 50-yard score, but St. John's answered after Murphy connected with a banged-up Richard Rodgers for a 29-yard pickup that saw Rodgers break four tacklers to bring the ball into Blue Devils' territory. After Murphy hit Christian Dulmaine for a 15-yard pickup, Vassar (8 carries, 56 yards) scored on a 19-yard run to make it 20-6.

ground the ball for a 15-yard loss, then Matt Higgins picked off a pass intended for Wilbon in the end zone.

Leominster's Lucas Tocci picked off Murphy on St. John's next drive, but two plays later Shane McGrail picked off Carignan to put the ball on the Pioneers' 39.  for a 63-yard touchdown. The 6-foot-4, 285-pound Moore added a conversion rush to make it 28-0. Leominster's final drive ended when Rodgers picked off Ludden in the end zone.

"I think we had a couple of key points in this game, some big stops and some key turnovers when we had to and that was really important," said St. John's coach John Andreoli - who notched his 50th career win.

Leominster coach John Dubzinski was proud of his team for playing the Pioneers tough until turnovers and penalties took their toll.

"St. John's is a good team, and they have a lot of weapons, and we did a pretty good job defensively on them for about three quarters of the game," Dubzinski said. "Turnovers killed us, and we couldn't get the ball in (the end zone)." St. John's 28, Leominster 6
