Defense Acquisition Board gives SADARM program the go-ahead for production.


AZUSA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 30, 1995--After meeting Thursday, the Defense Acquisition Board (DAB) gave its official go- ahead for the U.S. Army Sense and Destroy Armor Project Sense and Destroy ARMor, or SADARM, is a US 'smart' submunition capable of searching for, and destroying tanks within a given target area. The DAB, which reviews DoD programs to ensure they are ready to transition from one program phase to the next, found no issues with the proposed SADARM Production Program.

Under the proposed production plan, the U.S. Army will award prime contractor Aerojet and its partner Alliant Techsystems a contract for the first LRP in FY 1995. The U.S. Army expects to build more than 70,000 SADARM projectiles over the life of the program.

Production will take place at Aerojet's Azusa facility and Alliant Techsystems' Hopkins, Minn., facility.

The DAB is chaired by the Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisitions and co-chaired by the vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff The position of Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff was created by the Goldwater-Nichols Act of 1986. The Vice Chairman is a four-star general or admiral and by law the second highest ranking member of the U.S. Armed Forces (after the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff). . ) recommended that the program proceed to the DAB after its Jan. 13 review.

The ASARC is composed of top Army managers and reviews and recommends appropriate actions on major Army programs prior to the DAB.
