It didn't matter.

The Falcons proved their No. 1 ranking in the Class 3A state softball softball, variant of baseball played with a larger ball on a smaller field. Invented (1888) in Chicago as an indoor game, it was at various times called indoor baseball, mush ball, playground ball, kitten ball, and, because it was also played by women, ladies'  poll isn't solely based on the presence of the 2003 Class 3A player of the year by dominating Marist in all phases of the game Tuesday to earn a 7-0 Sky-Em League victory.

Elmira (12-0 overall) improved to 4-0 in league with the win, while the Spartans fell into a tie for second with Siuslaw at 2-1.

"You don't win the games on your pitcher, you win the games on runs scored," Elmira coach Pam Cook said. "It's not a decision like boxing or something, you have to score runs in order to win the game. That's the way it works and we really stress hitting the ball, running the bases well."

It certainly paid off for the defending state champions on Tuesday against Marist.

Leadoff hitters must possess certain traits to be successful: they must reach base at a proficient rate and be able to steal bases.
Angela Yost was 2-for-4 with a game-opening triple, No. 2 hitter Whitney Dragt was 2-for-3 with a double and a walk, and No. 9 hitter Katrina Wilkinson belted a pair of doubles.

So what kind of pitches did the Falcons hit?

"Anything close. We're taught to swing away," said Dragt, who drove in three runs, including one in the first inning, and scored three more. "We really work on it a lot in practice."

In fact, it looked a little like batting practice in the first three innings when Elmira had 11 runners reach base on seven hits, two errors and two walks before pitcher Christina Garrett managed to retire seven of the next eight batters BATTeRS (バッターズ) stands for Bisei Asteroid Tracking Telescope for Rapid Survey. The gates reopened in the sixth when Dragt and Cook both walked and Dragt scored on a single by Nicole Shaw to conclude the Falcons' scoring.

Cook finished with 10 strikeouts and one walk.

The lone Spartans to reach base were Julie-Ann Slager, who walked and was stranded at first in the third, and Plank, who ripped a double to center field before Cook struck out the next three batters swinging.
