Defending Freedom.

When reading the October 20 "Defending Freedom" issue, I could hardly believe my eyes when I saw your salute to Julia Brown Julia Brown was an American madam and prostitute. In the 1830s, Brown entered a brothel owned by Adeline Miller, a well-known New York madam. She did not stay long, however; soon Brown was running brothels of her own on Chapel and Church streets.  in the "Heroes of the JBS JBS John Birch Society

I have been fighting Communism for as many years as the John Birch Society John Birch Society, ultraconservative, anti-Communist organization in the United States. It was founded in Dec., 1958, by manufacturer Robert Welch and named after John Birch, an American intelligence officer killed by Communists in China (Aug., 1945). , and during a portion of those years I had the privilege to meet and know Julia. A group of concerned citizens here in Cleveland started what we called "The Organization to Fight Communism" in the late 1950s and early 1960s.  Department and the Cleveland FBI and members of the Congress. Julia came to many of our meetings and was our guest speaker on many occasions, She was a totally genuine, courageous woman, and I am so grateful for your public acknowledgment of her efforts.

She had the same setbacks as the rest of us in trying to make people believe that Communism was not dead. I remember her telling me how so many black Americans just called her an "Uncle Tom" and would not listen to her or believe what she actually lived through!

Thanks, too, for your excellent magazine--it's a ray of hope in a world of evil and hopelessness.

As a long-term member of the JBS, I hope you realize that I am a strong supporter of your organization. However, please permit me to offer a point for your consideration.

The cover of the October 20 issue of THE NEW AMERICAN features the words "Defending Freedom." As I perceive matters in our country, we had already lost most of our freedoms long before 9-11.

About the only real freedom left is that we can move from point A to point B without going through a checkpoint. However, if you are in an auto and are stopped by an officer, you had better have your seat belt fastened. The words "Defending Freedom" or "Protecting Our Freedom" are used so often by so many that it gives the average person the idea that we do have freedoms when we don't.

Would you please consider doing your part and begin using the words "Fighting to Restore Our Freedoms" or some similar expression, in the hope that this would motivate more people to join your organization and/or put pressure on our people in government to do more to get the government off our backs off our backs (sometimes referred to by its initials, oob) is a radical feminist periodical published in Washington, D.C.. It has been published continuously since it was founded in February 1970, making it the longest-running feminist periodical currently ?
