Technical and management sessions, which were held Tuesday through Friday, featured speakers from industry suppliers to metalcasting facility personnel and academic denizens.

The sessions reached a crescendo with the Hoyt Memorial Lecture, "The Engineering Profession in the 21st Century--Educational Needs and Societal Challenges Facing the Profession," by Diran Apelian, which was presented Friday morning (see p. 45).

Between sessions, attendees visited the exhibit hall for the latest product developments and one-on-one communication with suppliers.

At the Congress, AFS announced its Board of Directors for the beginning of the '06/'07 fiscal year. Albert Lucchetti, president, Cumberland Foundry, will serve as AFS President, Paul Mikkola, president, Metal Casting Metal casting

Wednesday evening, the industry's premier awards--the AFS Gold Medals--were awarded to Hathibelagal Roshan and Gary Thoe during the AFS Annual Banquet. Roshan and Thoe have spent decades working in the metalcasting industry as leaders in casting technology.

The Congress concluded with the President's Luncheon on May 18, where the awards of Scientific Merit, Service Citations and CMI Director's award (see p. 43) were given.

Roshan, Thoe Take Home Gold

AFS Gold Medals were awarded to Hathibelagal M. Roshan and Gary L. Thoe during the Annual Banquet at the Metalcasting Congress this year.

Roshan received the Thomas W. Pangborn Gold Medal for his technical and training contributions, which have served to advance and educate the industry worldwide through development of internet Cast Metals Institute (CMI) courses, and for his leadership in utilizing solidification modeling to advance the metalcasting industry.

Roshan serves as chief metallurgist at Maynard Steel Casting Steel casting is a manufacturing process in which molten metal is poured into a mold, allowed to solidify within the mold, and then the mold is broken and the solid piece is taken out.  Co., Milwaukee. He was awarded the AFS Award of Scientific Merit in 2001 and has authored or contributed to more than 100 technical papers. He also was awarded the CMI Director's Award this year.
