When an Albanian, Rifat Berisha, is found almost decapitated near the Bosphorus River in Istanbul, Inspector Ikmen becomes more involved in the case than he expects when it becomes known that his long-dead mother was Albanian. Soon he finds that his own family has become a target of the feud. As he discovers clues to the murder, he also discovers clues to his own family tragedies. Although the story is sometimes hard to follow because of the unfamiliar Turkish and Albanian names, the many parallel levels of family relationships that are sometimes loving and sometimes malignant are fully explored. Barrett's reading is filled with emotion and drama fitting to the story. He handles the crime aspects of the novel as well as he portrays the emotional upheavals of the many families who suffer as the traditional blood feud blood feud: see vendetta. touches their lives.
