, the project archaeologist, believes that the site is important for several reasons. First, the suspected ballast pile is near the seventeenth century anchor and associated artifact material described in the Deep Blue Marine press release of 10-02-06. Second, the suspected ballast pile is located approximately three quarters of a mile from Ballast Key Ballast Key, Florida (), is the southernmost point of land in the continental United States. It is also the only privately owned land within the boundaries of the Key West National Wildlife Refuge. , an island near the permitted area. The origin of the name Ballast Key is of unknown origin; it may be that, in the past, ballast was found on the island, or the present ballast pile under investigation may have been known in the past, and its proximity to the island resulted in the island being named Ballast Key. The Deep Blue Marine archaeological team will endeavor to answer these questions.
