FEI FEI Fédération Équestre Internationale. Chapter: San Francisco Leisure: "I enjoy spending time with my daughter, doing everything--from something special to nothing at all. Activities that refresh and energize me include hiking, camping, skiing, cycling, swimming, playing the piano, reading and baking angel food cakes." Time Management: "It's all about personal drive, strong organizational skills and working with great people. I am devoted to the Franklin Covey planning devices, 'Roles' and 'Goals.'" Stress Management: "I carve out some quiet time every day, preferably early in the morning, before the day's activities begin. I also try to engage regularly in some form of physical activity that is both fun and stress-relieving." I would spend 1 hour with: "Lance Armstrong. I would love to listen to his philosophy on the creation and implementation of a successful team, whether the goal is winning the Tour de France Tour de France World's most prestigious and difficult bicycle race. Staged for three weeks each July—usually in some 20 daylong stages—the Tour typically comprises 20 professional teams of nine riders each and covers some 3,600 km (2,235 miles) of flat and or winning the war against cancer." Favorite Deal: "My first acquisition of an extremely fine stringed instrument for the San Francisco Symphony: a 280-year-old violin made by the legendary Antonio Stradivari. The deal was fraught with intrigue, provided multiple opportunities for possible failure and involved a very large sum of money. It was a major--if sometimes harrowing--learning experience for me. I especially enjoyed helping to create the opportunity for an extraordinary musician to play on a violin she clearly loves." Favorite Book: "The Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley Marion Eleanor Zimmer Bradley (June 3, 1930 – September 25, 1999) was an American author of fantasy novels such as The Mists of Avalon and the Darkover series, often with a feminist outlook. ; the Arthurian legend told from the perspective of the powerful women surrounding King Arthur." If I could change something: "I would completely change the healthcare system in the U.S. I have a vast amount of knowledge and strong opinions on this matter, having survived cancer myself." As a child, I wanted to be: "An 'airline stewardess' (the title then). I believed there was more to life than what was presented to me in the small southern New Mexico town where I was born and raised. I wanted to travel the world, experience different cultures, learn several languages and write about my experiences." Quotables: "The price of greatness is responsibility;" and "Never, never, never give up," both by Sir Winston Churchill. "Out of life's school of war, what does not destroy me, makes me stronger," by Friedrich Nietzsche. Comments: "The extraordinary individuals with whom I work at the San Francisco Symphony inspire me professionally every day. They are highly accomplished, dedicated to their jobs and the organization, and unbelievably hardworking. However, it is my daughter, Phoebe, who inspires me most of all to lead by way of example. It is my hope that she will experience a healthy, happy and productive life, and will achieve whatever goals she sets for herself." Email: dsoulon@sfsymphony.org edited by Ellen M. Heffes |
