Covering the period 1940-45, this work documents the role played by Americans who served as Japanese-language officers in the US Navy and Marine Corps during WWII, focusing on the wartime experiences of the graduates of one of the 14 wartime military Japanese language programs, the Navy Japanese Language School at Boulder. The author argues that their service as code breakers and combat interpreters hastened victory, and that their cross-cultural experience and linguistic knowledge facilitated the successful dismantling of the Japanese empire and the peaceful occupation of Japan. B&w historical photos are included. Dingman taught history at the University of Southern California for 36 years.
