Lorraine Cranford, founder of Ballet Arkansas and Arkansas Festival Ballet, died in December at the age of 86. She trained classical ballet Noun 1. classical ballet - a style of ballet based on precise conventional steps performed with graceful and flowing movements

Frieda Flier (Maddow), a former member of the Martha Graham Dance Company, died in December. She was 87. Flier, who trained in L.A. with Carmelita Maracci, also danced with Eugene Loring's Dance Players and in the original Broadway production of Finian's Rainbow.

John Norman John Norman, pen name of John Frederick Lange, Jr. (born June 3, 1931), is a professor of philosophy, but is better known as the author of the Gor series, which was popular in the 1970s and early 1980s with millions of copies sold, and still has many fans. He holds a Ph.D.  Cain, company manager of Nevada Dance Theatre (now Nevada Ballet Theatre) from 1977 to 1998, died in December at the age of 68. In 1994 his work earned him the Nevada Arts Council's Governor's Award for Service in the Arts.

Katy Matheson, a dance writer and researcher, died in January from cancer. She had been the assistant to Dance Magazine editor in chief Richard Philp (from 1989-1991) and had edited a new section for the second edition of Selma Jeanne Cohen's Dance as a Theatre Art (1992), the classic anthology of writings by choreographers This is a list of choreographers A
