Once again Hamish Macbeth Hamish Macbeth is a fictional police officer who serves as his town's detective in a series of mystery novels created by M.C. Beaton (Marion Chesney). Character
Hamish Macbeth has a reputation for laziness; because he loves his native town of Lochdubh (meaning 'black lake'
 is confronted with crime and women who always seem to be nagging at his heels. This time, someone is sending poison pen letters A poison pen letter is a letter or note containing unpleasant, abusive or malicious statements or accusations about the recipient or a third party. It is usually sent anonymously. Poison pen letters are usually composed and sent to upset the recipient.  to townspeople, which leads to the murder and apparent suicides of some well-known folk. Macbeth has a little too much help from Jenny Ogilvie, a friend of his former fiancee, who wants to see what her friend has given up. The local newspaper folk also get in his way, but he eventually solves the case anyway.

The story is told with Scottish humor, which, if British humor is dry, can only be described as arid. Nonetheless, Malcolm gives the story all the flavor of Scottish Highlands
