"As a proud gay married couple and happy two-daddy family, we feel we must do everything we can to enlighten our leaders about marriage equality for families like ours," says Rob Calhoun, 36, who married his 37-year-old partner of 13 years, Clay, in Massachusetts last year, and with whom he is raising their adopted daughter, Rainey. "We want to put a real family face on this issue, which is why we've been writing to hundreds of leaders across the country, everyone from President Bush to Senator Clinton, all of whom do not support marriage equality," Rob says.

In their letter to Bush, the husband-and-husband team from Georgia included a family photo and talked about their love for one another. With specific legal references and personal anecdotes they carefully articulated why they need the protection of marriage and expressed the pain that Bush's proposed constitutional marriage ban has brought. "imagine it was your family under attack; how would you feel?" they asked Bush. "We do not want our precious daughter to grow up feeling that her family is devalued and hated by the government because her parents are gay."

There's been no response from the White House, nor to letters sent to John Kerry, Bill Frist, Dennis Hastert, Hillary and Bill Clinton, Jimmy Carter, and Barack Obama. But the couple has heard back from the offices of the vice president and the first lady, both of whom seemed to "take our letter and photo to heart," Rob says.
