Dear Abby ...

COLUMN: In our opinion; Editorial Footnote

What Pauline Friedman Phillips used to write carried weight, and wit.

Better known by the pen name Abigail Van Buren - and instantly recognizable by the words that were practically her nickname, "Dear Abby" - she fit thoughtful advice into succinct newspaper columns for more than 40 years.

And that advice had a light touch. This is doable, she urged, whatever the topic or how stubborn the trouble. Take it a day at a time. And, for heaven's sake, don't take yourself so seriously.

Mrs. Phillips died Wednesday in Minneapolis at age 94. She leaves a husband of 73 years, time-softened clippings in wallets around the world, and a needed example of quiet common sense.
