On Aug. 28, Capitol Records will release Dean Martin's "Italian Love Songs," a new CD compilation featuring 16 romantic classics, sung as only Dino could.

If ever a voice was put on this planet to sing Italian love songs, it belonged to Dino Paul Crocetti, better known as Dean Martin to the millions of fans all over the world who adored him. And sing them he did, throughout his career, turning several into bona fide U.S. hits: "That's Amore" (No. 2), "Return To Me" (No. 4), "Volare" (No. 12), "Innamorata" (No. 27) and "On An Evening In Roma" (No. 59).

Following the DVD and VHS release of "That's Amore," which features clips from the nine-year TV-run of "The Dean Martin Show," "Italian Love Songs" will continue to draw fans old and new.

It shows the great charm of the singer and his songs, evoking visions of romance amid the beautiful Italian landscapes -- the perfect accompaniment to a candlelit dinner of red wine and pasta on a checkered tablecloth in your favorite little restaurant.

Born of a first-generation Italian-American mother and an immigrant father who hailed from the Abruzzi region of Italy, young Dino spoke only his father Gaetano's native language until the age of five.

As a result of his early exposure to the noble Roman tongue, Dean Martin became one of the few (if not only) American-born pop singers who sang Italian songs with authenticity and the charm inherent in their melodies and lyrics. But like everything else he did, Martin made it sound effortless and easy, blended with just a hint of whimsy.

Classifying Italian as one of the Romantic languages seems redundant in Martin's hands. True, many of the songs in this collection are sung entirely in English, but when filtered through the Martin vocal chords, they evoke the unmistakable ambiance of the Mediterranean, transcending language and geographical boundaries.

Martin could have sung them in Swahili and they would still have been Italian love songs. Period. No other artist had as many Italian songs so closely associated with his career before Martin, and no one has come close since.
