While most C&W discs display less than ideal engineering (with the probable reason being that the producers want to make the material sound good on automotive-cassette systems or cheap home stereos), Billy Dean has turned out a number of fine engineering efforts. In my earlier book of reviews, I gave his recordings higher-than average marks and I am including this one here because even though it is not truly state-of-the-art, it is still decent enough to prove that there is no law against producing well-recorded country music. The overall sound is articulate and well-defined, with a surprisingly good sound stage. The dynamics are attention getting and the synthesized reverb re·verb Informal n. 1. However, I must admit that the steering is helpful if one is listening from some distance off center, but only if the center speaker is a proper one with a good F-R balance with the mains, and with good phase integration with the, too. It moves Dean back to the primary position and also restores the feeling of stage depth. Synthesized ambience was only workable with the smaller of the two jazz-club settings of the DSP-A3090 in my larger system and the DSP-A1000 in my smaller one. Anything else tended to bloat the somewhat forward vocal sound. -- HF |
