DeBerry and grant calling ... South Carolina club is excited about winning essay contest.


When Corrie Claiborne, a member of the Reading Between the Wines Book Club, heard that her group had won the DeBerry and Grant Book Club Contest, she screamed into this editor's ear. "Oh, thank you. That's so great!"

Claiborne, an English professor at Claflin University in Orangeburg, South Carolina Orangeburg, also known as "The Garden City," is the largest city and county seat of Orangeburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 12,765 at the 2000 census.  reader who saw a notice for the contest just after her group had read Far From the Tree (St. Martin's Press, September 2000). She suggested the group enter and then took care of submitting the required essay.

The winning group is relatively new. They were started in October 2003, by Pamela Kimpson, a pharmaceutical sales rep. Another member, Vivian Delgado Johnson, an executive for a cellular phone company, was also "very proactive" in recruiting members and sending out notices, Claiborne said.
