But the glossing-over of the group's gay roots (and the homosexuality of some of its members) began almost as soon as the band tasted mainstream success. The occasion for The Advocate's reflection was the production of Can't Stop the Music, the squeaky-clean extravaganza loosely based on the Village People's founding with the help of openly gay promoter-composer Jacques Morali Jacques Morali (4 July 1946 - 15 November 1991) was a French music producer, who is best remembered for being the creator and driving force behind the disco group, Village People. .
