De-gaying the Village People: December 27, 1979. (From the Advocate Archives). With songs such as "YMCA YMCA in full Young Men's Christian Association Nonsectarian, nonpolitical Christian lay movement that aims to develop high standards of Christian character among its members. " and "Macho Man" booming at frat parties and sports events, Americans have long disassociated the Village People from gay culture. But the glossing-over of the group's gay roots (and the homosexuality of some of its members) began almost as soon as the band tasted mainstream success. In a 1979 issue, The Advocate lamented that in 1977 the group "seemed like such a godsend god·send n. Something wanted or needed that comes or happens unexpectedly. [Alteration of Middle English goddes sand, God's message : goddes, genitive of God, God .... Six versions of our macho drag right up there. Then ... something happened. Big macho became Big Macs--more of the counterculture coun·ter·cul·ture n. A culture, especially of young people, with values or lifestyles in opposition to those of the established culture. coun caught up by middle-class--and straight--America." The occasion for The Advocate's reflection was the production of Can't Stop the Music, the squeaky-clean extravaganza loosely based on the Village People's founding with the help of openly gay promoter-composer Jacques Morali Jacques Morali (4 July 1946 - 15 November 1991) was a French music producer, who is best remembered for being the creator and driving force behind the disco group, Village People. .
