De Leuw adding 3.5 miles to San Diego's light rail system and transit center in Old Town.


SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 5, 1995--De Leuw, Cather & Co. is providing design support services support services Psychology Non-health care-related ancillary services–eg, transportation, financial aid, support groups, homemaker services, respite services, and other services  for the final phase of the Old Town Light Rail Transit The name Light Rail Transit is used by the following specific light rail systems, either as an official name or otherwise:

) Extension Project which adds 3.5 miles of trolley track and a transit center to the city's light rail service.

The LRT project was initiated in San Diego five years ago and will be completed by spring 1996. The contract with the Metropolitan Transit Development Board (MTDB MTDB Metropolitan Transit Development Board ) includes De Leuw's design services for previous phases of the project and covers design consulting services after groundbreaking of the project's final leg in June 1995.

"This extension will start north of the existing San Diego Depot at Cedar Street and will extend to Old Town at Taylor Street," said Robert Sergeant, De Leuw project manager. "It provides access to the downtown shopping district, the downtown business district, Old Town and south to the International Border at Tijuana -- the busiest border crossing in the world."

This last portion of the project will bring the total number of miles of track to 37.5 and will include the construction of the Old Town Transit Center Old Town Transit Center is a passenger train station on Amtrak's Pacific Surfliner rail route, the San Diego Coaster, and the Blue and Green Lines of the San Diego Trolley. It is located adjacent to Old Town San Diego State Historic Park. , a depot that will resemble an 1870's train station, said Sergeant. The new track extension will run north-south, parallel to Interstate 5.

 and minimize conflicts with vehicular traffic, the track will be laid below Grape and Hawthorn streets, explained Sergeant. The Old Town Transit Center, though it will appear to be a rustic stagecoach stagecoach, heavy, closed vehicle on wheels, usually drawn by horses, formerly used to transport passengers and goods overland. Throughout the Middle Ages and until about the end of the 18th cent.  stop, will accommodate 20 bus bays, 550 parking spaces, four rail platforms, a pedestrian undercrossing and the depot building.

(SDTI) is a subsidiary of the San Diego Metropolitan Transit System (MTS). , Coaster commuter trains, buses and taxis. The antique reproduction will be one of three stops along the trolley line extending from Little Italy and downtown, said Sergeant.

There are future plans to link the Old Town Transit Center to a new trolley line that runs through Mission Valley to San Diego's Jack Murphy Stadium.
