microcontrollers and a leading supplier of serial EEPROMs and specialty nonvolatile memory products for embedded control applications, Tuesday kicked off the latest session of its popular "De$igning for Dollar$" Design Challenge.

"De$igning for Dollar$" offers cash and other prizes for submitted engineering designs which use the world's smallest microcontrollers -- Microchip's PIC12CXXX family of 8-pin 8-bit OTP (1) (One Time Programmable) Refers to programming content or logic into chips such as EPROMs and EEPROMs, which cannot be reversed.  microcontrollers -- for a given design application. Participants have three weeks from today through Sept. 20 to create a basic imaginative design which fulfills this challenge.

"For the next session, Microchip is challenging engineers to design unique consumer appliance applications," said Damon Chu, strategic marketing manager. "We're seeking the most whimsical gadgets, gizmos and appliances which take advantage of the PIC12CXXX solution."

At the end of each monthly session, selected entries receive $100 per submission. Microchip is also giving away for selected submissions its PICSTART(R) Plus low-cost development kit for the PICmicro(TM) family of microcontrollers.

Hewlett-Packard Co. is offering its HP E2310A LogicDart (a $795 value) and an HP54645D Mixed Signal Oscilloscope A mixed signal oscilloscope (or MSO) has two kinds of inputs, a small number (typically two or four) of analogue channels, and a larger number (typically sixteen) of digital channels.  (a $4,995 value) as incentives for design submissions and to improve engineering productivity through advanced features.

To enter "De$igning for Dollar$," simply complete the entry form which can be downloaded as an .rtf file on the design challenge web site. Design submissions should be e-mailed to: designing.dollars@microchip.com. In addition to the design session themes, participants can submit at any time QuickCode(TM), a code snippet A small amount of something. In the computer field, it often refers to a small piece of program code. , or SimpleCircuit(TM), a design based on the 8-pin microcontrollers for any application. Check the "De$igning for Dollar$" site for more information.

The popular PIC12CXXX family packs Microchip's powerful RISC-based PICmicro architecture into 8-pin PDIP (Plastic DIP) See DIP.  and SOIC (Small Outline IC) A small-dimension, plastic, rectangular, surface mount chip package that uses gull-wing pins extending outward. The first two members of this product family, the PIC12C508 and PIC12C509, feature 512 words of program memory with 25 bytes of user RAM and 1024 words of program memory with 41 bytes of user RAM, respectively.

The PIC12C508 and PIC12C509 offer six I/O (Input/Output) The transfer of data between the CPU and a peripheral device. Every transfer is an output from one device and an input to another. See PC input/output.
