"Sometimes children have 'meltdowns' because there is too much anticipation and too many unrealistic expectations around the holidays," says Laura Varnell, director Dayspring - Plano.

DaySpring offers these tips to ensure a stress-free holiday season for children and parents alike:

--Talk with your child ahead of time and tell them what to expect. Show them pictures of previous holiday seasons and remind them of friends and relatives they may only see once a year.

--Never force your child to be held by people he or she is not comfortable with; this includes relatives, friends, and Santa. Let your child warm up to people; forcing your children will only exacerbate their fears.

--Keep your children on their "normal" schedule as much as possible. This includes avoiding shopping trips, activities, and even visitors during nap times.

--Involve your child with decorating. Making the transition together will help them understand the changes that are taking place and give them a comfort level with them.

--Make time for calming activities. Slow down the pace and remember to enjoy just being together as a family.
