Brooklyn-born Irving Burgie penned 34 songs for singer Harry Belafonte Harold George Belafonte, Jr. (born March 1, 1927) is an American musician, actor and social activist. One of the most successful Jamaican musicians in history, he was dubbed the "King of Calypso" for popularizing the Caribbean musical style in the 1950s. , yet their version of the Banana Boat Song, a Jamaican folk song folk song, music of anonymous composition, transmitted orally. The theory that folk songs were originally group compositions has been modified in recent studies. , is the most notable. In his appealing autobiography, Burgie recounts his life in Brooklyn, serving in World War II and becoming an award-winning composer, a composer who says, "I had never even thought about becoming a musician."
