Here are three people who were there in person on that momentous day in history in 1970 when His Majesty

 at the Institute of Public Administration for 19 years. Now 52 years old, MalallahAAEs face brightens as he recalls the excitement and jubilation of that day.

AoI saw His Majesty in his car. Later, he addressed the vast crowd that had gathered to see and hear him. While speaking to the public, he stressed the importance of education and said that it must be achieved even if it was to be carried out under the shade of a tree. He promised development and change to the people and since then there has been no looking back as the country has progressed tremendously under his benevolent rule.Ao

Seventy-three-year-old Hamed Saif Hamood al Sulaimi was chatting with his friends in the evening at Muttrah Souq area when TheWeek spoke to him. He was very pleased to relate his experience of the moment he saw His Majesty for the first time in Muscat.

AoAs expected, we were very happy as the new Sultan was about to change our lives for the better. Since then, there has only been contentment, pride and appreciation for all that has followed,Ao he said. AoI was 34 years old then and we had all walked from Bait al Falaj, the airport at that time, to Muscat Palace, following our leader.

" Practice for the celebrations was on for a week before His MajestyAAEs arrival in Muscat. I saw him in his car and wished I could go up to him and greet him personally. However, I do cherish a photograph of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos taken on that day and it is framed and kept in my house. It was presented to me by some kind and generous neighbours.Ao
