Daxor Announces the Publication of Cleveland Clinic Study in the American Heart Journal - Blood Volume Measurement More Accurate Guide in Treating Heart Failure than BNP.

NEW YORK -- Daxor Corporation (AMEX AMEX

:DXR), a medical instrumentation and biotechnology company, announces the publication of a study by the Cleveland Clinic in American Heart Journal. The study's data discusses that blood volume (BV) measurement may be a more accurate guide in optimizing treatment of congestive heart failure congestive heart failure, inability of the heart to expel sufficient blood to keep pace with the metabolic demands of the body. In the healthy individual the heart can tolerate large increases of workload for a considerable length of time.  patients than brain natriuretic peptide Brain natriuretic peptide (also known as B-type natriuretic peptide or "GC-B") is a 32 amino acid polypeptide secreted by the ventricles of the heart in response to excessive stretching of myocytes (heart muscles cells) in the ventricles.  (BNP) testing.

BNP is a widely used diagnostic test identified as the marker of choice marker of choice A lab parameter used to evaluate disease response to therapy and monitor for recurrence; MOCs include RNA for progression of HIV infection and CEA for colorectal cancer  for diagnosing and assessing the severity of heart failure. The Cleveland Clinic study, published in November's issue of American Heart Journal (Volume 150, Number 5), compared critical invasive hemodynamic he·mo·dy·nam·ics

measurements in patients with congestive heart failure (CHF) to BV and BNP measurements before and after treatment. The study noted that, "In general, changes in BV with treatment correlated better with actual hemodynamics hemodynamics /he·mo·dy·nam·ics/ (-di-nam´iks) the study of the movements of blood and of the forces concerned.hemodynam´ic

then did BNP.... These preliminary data suggest that BV rather than BNP may be a more accurate guide in treatment of CHF, even in the absence of invasive monitoring."

The study data was reported from America's #1 Heart Hospital, the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine, Kaufman Center for Heart Failure, Cleveland Clinic Foundation, Cleveland, OH. The senior authors of the article included Dr. Karen James, Dr. Richard Troughton and Dr. Fetnat Fouad-Tarazi. Dr. James commented, "Although this was a small pilot study, it demonstrated that blood volume measurement may be a more useful tool than invasive hemodynamic and BNP measurements when treating a heart failure patient's volume derangement de·range·ment

. Even invasive hemodynamic measurements do not provide a quantification of a patient's blood, plasma and red cell volume. That important quantification comes from a direct measure of blood volume, as provided by the blood volume analyzer."

Over 4.5 million Americans have been diagnosed with heart failure, and nearly 550,000 new cases are diagnosed annually. Diagnosis and treatment in CHF is often difficult and multifaceted. Blood volume abnormalities are common in CHF, and pharmacological treatment often results in alteration of the blood volume. Daxor's Blood Volume Analyzer is the only FDA approved device that provides a 98% accurate and direct measure of a patient's blood volume status.
