Dawn Upshaw joins Bard College Conservatory.


The Bard College Conservatory of Music The Bard College Conservatory of Music is a program of Bard College in Annandale-on-Hudson, New York. Founded in 2005, the program is unique among music conservatories in the United States in that all students are required to participate in a five-year dual-degree program, in which  has appointed soprano Dawn Upshaw Dawn Upshaw (born July 17, 1960 in Nashville, Tennessee) is a world-renowned American soprano described as "one of the most consequential performers of our time" by the Los Angeles Times.  as the Charles Franklin Kellogg and Grace E. Ramsey Kellogg Professor of the Arts and Humanities at Bard College Conservatory of Music.

In the initial phase, Upshaw's involvement will focus on designing a course of study for the conservatory's new vocal and vocal-dramatic program. Her role at Bard will further develop over time, consistent with her performing schedule. The new conservatory will open its doors in the fall of 2005; the vocal and vocal-dramatic program will begin in the fall of 2006.

Upshaw also will be involved with the development of Bard's Richard B. Fisher Richard B. "Dick" Fisher (1936 – December 16, 2004) was chairman emeritus of the securities firm Morgan Stanley. Early life
Fisher was born in Philadelphia. In 1944 at age 8, Dick contracted a severe case of polio.
 Center for Performing Arts as a performance laboratory for composers, performers and directors.

In addition to her opera and concert career, the three-time Grammy Award-winning Upshaw currently is on the faculty of the Tanglewood Music Institute, where she also is a frequent performer. She is a member of the Advisory Council of the Weill Music Institute at Carnegie Hall, where she currently is featured as a perspectives artist. She regularly presents master classes as part of her touring schedule and is a recital partner with Richard Goode.

Upshaw holds honorary doctorate degrees from Yale, the Manhattan School of Music Founded in 1917, the school is located on Claremont Avenue in the Morningside Heights neighborhood of New York City, adjacent to the campus of Columbia University, where it has been since 1969.
