Davisco Foods International, Le Sueur, Minn., broke ground on a $40 million state-of-the-art mozzarella cheese plant adjacent to its food ingredient plant in Lake Norden, S.D. The result will create 60 new jobs at the cheese plant, secure the 90 existing jobs, and dramatically increase the market for milk produced by area farmers by as much as 5 million pounds per day. The new dairy plant will initially support the milk production from 30,000 cows, and eventually expand to require the production from 75,000 cows. Land O'Lakes Inc. will market the cheese produced at the new plant and will partner with Davisco Foods International in milk procurement for the plant.
