ONE player who showed confidence to spare was Simon Davies, who put his lack of first team opportunity with Spurs this term behind him with a scintillating display.

"That was certainly the best I've done in a Wales shirt, although it would have been a lot better if I'd scored a couple of goals, " said Davies.

"We were without Ryan Giggs and maybe that put a bit more pressure on me to produce the crosses, and I was delighted with the ball for John's goal.

"But we aren't just about one player anyway, and maybe the extra responsibility is good for us.

"Personally, I had chances and we had a lot of chances as a team.

"But this is a good result and one that we can build on, and look to the future with optimism now.

"It's just unfortunate that we showed the belief in ourselves today that we didn't show in the four or five other games we might have got more out of.

"We want to be in a position where we are winning a lot of games, not just one.

"If we don't go out and build on this then it's a waste."

Davies is now targeting a regular place in the Wales side for the European Championship qualifiers.

"That's my personal aim now, " he added. "I feel like I'm settling in as part of the squad now.

"Given a reasonable draw I think we can be very optimistic."

Meanwhile 'keeper Paul Jones, who proved to be the late hero with a superb save just as Belarus looked like stealing a draw, believes the win could be a significant milestone when the record books are written on Mark Hughes' international tenure.

"It was an important win for us, and it gives us all great heart for the future, especially if we get a decent draw in the European Championships, " said the Southampton star.
