David adds new string to his bow; cinema/theatre Player, 12, heads for Cardiff top title battle.

A YOUNG violinist is hoping to add another string to his bow after setting his sights on one of this year's most coveted music titles.

 will be competing for the Texaco Young Musician of Wales 2009 title next month in Cardiff. The 12-year-old is one of the youngest ever competitors to make it through to the final, hosted by former Blue Peter presenter Gethin Jones.

The Manchester Chetham's School of Music pupil made it through after beating over 70 entrants and impressing the judges in the regional rounds.

David, who first started playing the violin The violin player usually holds the instrument under the chin, supported by the left shoulder (see below for variations of this posture). The strings are sounded either by drawing the bow across them (arco), or sometimes by plucking them (pizzicato).  aged just four, is one of five finalists. He will now battle it out against four other finalists, aged 11-17, at the final at St David's Hall St David's Hall (Welsh: Neuadd Dewi Sant) is a performing arts and venue in the heart of Cardiff city centre, the capital of Wales. St David's Hall is the National Concert Hall and Conference Centre of Wales.  in Cardiff on Saturday, March 7.

"I really enjoy playing the violin, I also play the piano and my elder brother William is musical too," said David, from Llandudno Junction.

"I've been at music school since I was nine years old after auditioning to get in and although I mainly study music my other favourite subjects include art and English.

"At school I study chamber music, which I am really into. I like playing in a string quartet as well as playing solo," he said.

He came second in the Urdd National Eisteddfod eisteddfod (īstĕth`vəd, –vôd) [Welsh,=session], Welsh competitive festival. Contests traditionally are held in all the arts and crafts, with special emphasis on music and poetry.  aged just eight and hopes his success will continue by winning the Texaco trophy and pounds 1,000 prize money.

"I am not that nervous about the competition because I have been working hard towards it," added David.

"My nerves usually depend on how much practice I have put in before the competition. This is quite a big event, but I think I've got a really good chance. I reckon if you work hard enough at something you can really make it happen."

David will be cheered on by his 16-year-old brother William plus his mum Janeen, a piano teacher, and dad Nigel, a singing teacher, when he competes in Cardiff.

David has already experienced the impacts of the competition after S4C S4C skate for cancer
S4C Siannel Pedwar Cymru (Channel 4 Wales, Television) 
 staff saw him compete in the regional finals back in October and invited him to perform at the Daily Post's very own Llangollen Thousands of Christmas Voices concert in December.

His mother Janeen Shaw said: "David was very excited and very confident. I'm sure he enjoyed it."

David added: "I put a lot of energy into my music and I hope that all the hard work will pay off.

I am delighted to have secured a spot in the final and hope that I can impress the judges enough to go on and win the title."
