David Winter becomes president and chief operating officer of SangStat; Philippe Pouletty elected chairman.


MENLO PARK, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 27, 1995--SangStat, The Transplant Company (Nasdaq:SANG) Monday announced that David L. Winter, M.D., had been named president and chief operating officer Chief Operating Officer (COO)

Winter, 61, formerly president and chief operating officer of GenPharm U.S., GenPharm International Inc., of Mountain View, assumes the presidency from Philippe Pouletty, M.D., a founder of the company. Prior to joining GenPharm, Winter served for nearly fifteen years in a range of senior medical and scientific positions with various U.S. units of Sandoz Ltd. Pouletty founded SangStat in 1988 with Dr. David Rammler and served as president and CEO. Previously he had been director of research at Clonatec, a French diagnostics company he co-founded. As chairman he succeeds Gordon Russell, a general partner of Sequoia Capital, who has served in this position since 1992. Russell, 61, will remain a director of the company.

SangStat is a biopharmaceutical company dedicated to disease management in the field of organ transplantation. Of SangStat's eleven products and product candidates, one is a licensed-in, commercially-proven drug, three are currently available for clinical and research use and several others are at an advanced stage of development. SangStat's drug candidates include THYMOGLOBULIN to treat graft rejection, CLYCLOSPORINE for chronic immunosuppresive therapy and ALLOTRAP to promote graft acceptance following transplantation.
