David Sarnoff Research Center appoints Dr. Curtis R. Carlson Executive Vice President.


PRINCETON, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 30, 1995--The appointment of Dr. Curtis R. Carlson as Executive Vice President, Interactive Systems Division, has been announced by Dr. James E. Carnes, President and Chief Executive Officer of the David Sarnoff Research Center.

According to Dr. Carnes, "in the newly created position of Executive Vice President, Dr. Carlson will be able to better position Sarnoff in the rapidly growing areas of information and interactive systems." These areas include virtual reality applications, personal communication systems, digital home entertainment systems, high-definition television, and applications that allow people to collaborate, work, train and obtain medical services electronically at a distance.

Dr. Carlson believes that, "these developments will have a profound impact on both our homes and businesses. They represent one of the most important business opportunities of our age." In addition, Dr. Carlson will have overall responsibility for developments in television, communications, displays, computing, and multimedia.

Dr. Carlson joined the David Sarnoff Research Center in 1973 as a Member of the Technical Staff where he developed laser scanned imaging systems. He was named Head of the Image Quality and Human Perception Research Group in 1981, and in 1984 was named Director, Information Systems Research Laboratory. Dr. Carlson was named Vice President, Information Systems Research Division in December 1990.

Dr. Carlson started and helped lead the digital HDTV (High Definition TV) A set of digital television (DTV) standards that offer the highest resolution and sharpest picture. Although some HDTV sets are available in standard (rather square) screen sizes, the overwhelming majority of sets are wide screen, which eliminates  program at Sarnoff that, in 1993, culminated in the Grand Alliance digital HDTV system under development for the U.S.

), a "center of excellence" for the United States government in display and information processing technologies located at Sarnoff. The NIDL represents a new model for government and industry collaboration.

Dr. Carlson has also co-founded a number of new companies. They include: Sensar, a computer vision company based on pyramid image processing; SRTC SRTC Savannah River Technology Center
SRTC Spokane Regional Transportation Council
SRTC Subsystem Routing - Test Control (ANSI)
SRTC Seattle Research and Training Center, Inc.
, a multimedia server company; and Sarif, the first polysilicon display company in the U.S. He is a board member of these companies.

In 1993, Dr. Carlson was named to the Air Force Science Advisory Board and has served on numerous other government task forces, including the ARL "blue ribbon" panel to help develop the Army's Federated Connected and treated as one. Dr. Carlson was the recipient of two RCA See RCA connector and video/TV history.  Laboratories Outstanding Achievement awards. He has presented or published more than 50 technical publications and has over 15 issued U.S. patents in the fields of image quality, image coding, and computer vision.
