Career history: I landed my first full-time reporting job when I was 20, and have been at it now for 12 years in various positions. I became editorial page editor last July.

Recent awards: I won "Best of show" for editorial writing from the Maryland-Delaware-D.C. Press Association. I also won Best Editorial Writing in 1999 from the Suburban Newspapers of America.

Outside professional work: I have taught journalism at Washington College and I'm teaching again this fall at Cecil Community College.

Writing adventures: My first novel, Sharpshooter, was recently published by Penguin Putnam as a mass-market paperback. It's an historical thriller about an attempt to assassinate as·sas·si·nate

Union Gen. Ulysses S.Grant during the Civil War. I just sent my next historical thriller to the publisher -- we'll see what happens. (Visit me and my book at www.davidhealey.freeservers.com/ss.html)

Last book read: The Thirteenth Warrior by Michael Crichton, The Guardship by James L. Nelson For other uses, see James Nelson (disambiguation).

James L. Nelson (1962-) is an American historical nautical novelist. He was born in Lewiston, Maine. In 1980, Nelson graduated from Lewiston High School.
, Wake of the Perdido Star by Daniel Lenihan and Gene Hackman. Lots of history, lots of adventure.

Best thing about job: It's having people stop me on the street and say, "Your editorial was exactly right!"

Worst thing about job: It's taking a stance, and then dealing with the fallout, especially in a small community.
