) has announced that David Gordon Shand, M.D., Ph.D. will join the company as executive vice president, research & development reporting to the chief operating officer Chief Operating Officer (COO)

 degree in physiology and a Ph.D. in pharmacology from St. Bartholomew's Hospital Medical College in London, England. He received his medical and surgical degrees with honors also from St. Bartholomew. Prior to joining Carrington in this new position, Dr. Shand was executive vice president, research & development and chief scientific officer for The Liposome liposome (lī`pəsōm', lĭp`ə–), microscopic, fluid-filled pouch whose walls are made of layers of phospholipids identical to the phospholipids that make up cell membranes.  Company (Princeton, N.J.). Dr. Shand was chief, division of clinical pharmacology, Duke University Medical Center from 1978-1983. He served as professor of pharmacology and medicine, and in other professorial capacities at Vanderbilt University (Nashville) from 1970 to 1978.

During the last 12 years, Dr. Shand has compiled an enviable record of achievement. He has supervised the submission of 14 New Drug Applications (NDAs) of which 10 have resulted in bringing new products to market to date; he has developed five new clinical and 13 new chemical entities; and, he has developed seven line extensions.
