David A. Derby, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Datron Systems, commented, "The decision to license the manufacturing rights to our business jet antennas and concentrate on the commercial airline market for satellite TV was reached after careful evaluation of the two markets. (TM) programming is the boost this industry needs to spur the development of airline in-flight satellite TV. DIRECTV AIRBORNE is a 24-channel package that airline passengers will be able to view from flat screens installed on each seat back. This service puts to rest some of the content and licensing issues that have been a concern in the past.

"Datron helped to pioneer this industry by providing the antenna used in the installation of the first in-flight satellite TV system on Delta Airlines Spirit of Delta in August 1996. Another indication of Datron's technological leadership in the airborne data transmission field was the recent successful completion of a first phase test by the U.S. Air Force of the government's Global Broadcast Service. Datron's antenna provided high bandwidth video and data services to the test aircraft. We intend to further this development and apply it to commercial aircraft, with the objective of bringing high speed Internet service to the business traveler once the required satellite infrastructure is in place."
