Date set for election of new mayor.

The election for a new North Tyneside mayor will take place on June 12.

Leaders of the three political parties had agreed to set the date at special meeting on May 6, but deputy leader of the Lib Dems, Coun Graeme Brett said the council is in crisis and needs an elected mayor as soon as possible.

The election follows the resignation of Chris Morgan, who has quit to defend himself against allegations of computer child porn and indecent assault.

John Marsden, chief executive of North Tyneside council, said: "The tight schedule will certainly put additional pressure on the council's resources and may lead to additional costs.

"While I have great confidence in the borough's electoral systems and staff, the earlier date could result in some council business being set aside. That's a matter we will have to consider over the next few days."

Coun Graeme Brett said: "The council is in a crisis situation, having received a very poor Corporate Performance Assessment and it now has no mayor to provide the political leadership. It is therefore imperative that the by- election is called at the earliest possible date to put the council back on track."

Lib Dems have selected group leader Coun Michael Huscroft and Coun David Ord as candidates.

Labour has also started its selection process with candidates due to be announced on May 8.
