:DWCH), a global leader in enterprise reporting solutions and support center software, today announced Monarch(tm) Data Pump, a revolutionary data conversion solution that leverages an organization's investment in reports and reporting systems as a practical shortcut (1) In Windows, a shortcut is an icon that points to a program or data file. Shortcuts can be placed on the desktop or stored in other folders, and double clicking a shortcut is the same as double clicking the original file.  for solving data conversion problems. Monarch Data Pump allows users to dramatically simplify data acquisition, data transformation and data propagation through use of report files, thereby making it much easier to populate and refresh data marts and data warehouses, perform Y2K conversions and move data between formerly incompatible systems.

In most organizations, operational data is maintained in multiple applications, in multiple tables, in multiple formats and on multiple platforms. Traditional ways to extract and convert legacy data have been costly, time-consuming and error-prone because they require deciphering complex database schema; understanding business rules and program logic; building extraction and conversion routines; and extensive auditing to ensure data integrity. By leveraging a common output feature shared by all operational systems -- report generation capabilities -- Monarch Data Pump provides the easiest and most cost-effective way to extract and convert data from legacy systems.

"Reports mask the complexities of underlying applications and database schema," said Marc Peterson, senior vice president of North American operations at Datawatch. "Data contained in reports has already been extracted, cleansed and denormalized. The magic of a report-based data conversion solution is its ability to exploit all the knowledge and metadata inherent in existing reporting systems. Monarch Data Pump provides a practical, quick-to-implement solution for IT professionals who need to extract and transform data from legacy systems and don't have the time to decipher database schema and program logic."

"Companies are finding it is very difficult to build and maintain the complex code needed to extract and prepare data for decision support databases," said Robert Craig, vice president of Application Architectures at Hurwitz Group, an IT consulting firm in Framingham, Mass. "The extraction and transformation products are complicated and expensive, and often require in-depth knowledge of arcane data structures and legacy databases. Datawatch has realized there is an opportunity to use existing reports to source decision support databases, which should simplify and accelerate the data transition process."

Data Extraction

At the heart of Monarch Data Pump is a powerful data extraction engine that can pull data out of virtually any report, from simple columnar reports to complex reports with headers, footers and multiple sort levels. The Monarch Modeler lets the user define and test data extraction templates in a visual environment.

Data Transformation

Monarch Data Pump offers robust data transformation capabilities unmatched by competing data conversion technologies. Since Monarch Data Pump features dozens of data transformation functions designed for non-technical end users, it practically eliminates the need to write complex conversion programs.

Data Propagation

This ensures that Monarch Data Pump does not access or modify database objects without proper authorization.

Fields extracted (or derived) from a report are mapped to fields in a destination data table. A point-and-click interface makes the mapping process easy. Source and destination fields are selected from drop-down lists, and sample data is available in a scrollable browse window.

Monarch Data Pump can read report files produced on any mainframe, midrange, client/server or PC system.
